What does an EKG Technician do?

EKG Technicians perform diagnostic tests that record the electrical activity of the heart. These tests help physicians identify heart conditions and monitor cardiac health.

Common job duties include:

  • Preparing patients for electrocardiogram (EKG) testing
  • Operating EKG, Holter, and stress test equipment
  • Ensuring accurate electrode placement
  • Monitoring patients during testing
  • Documenting and reporting test results
  • Maintaining and calibrating equipment

Certified EKG Technician (CET) Certification

The Certified EKG Technician (CET) credential recognizes entry‑level and experienced technicians who have demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and hands‑on experience needed to work safely and effectively in cardiac diagnostic settings.

CETs support patient care by performing diagnostic tests that monitor heart activity. They are responsible for preparing patients, operating EKG and cardiac monitoring equipment, and accurately recording and reporting test results.

Certification Requirements

To obtain the Certified EKG Technician (CET) certification, candidates must:

  • Complete required hands‑on clinical requirements
    • Certified EKG Technician (CET) Requirements: 10 EKGs
  • Pass the NHA Certified EKG Technician (CET) exam

Hands‑On Experience (Clinical Sites)

Candidates often complete their clinical requirements at:

  • Hospitals
  • Outpatient Practice/Private Practice
  • Cardiology clinics
