POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Pharmacy Technician provides technician support including prior authorizations, care coordination and task management to providers at IHA Hematology Oncology and IHA Gynecologic Oncology. Provides pharmacy technician support for the clinical oncology pharmacist.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Supports IHA Hematology Oncology and Gynecology Oncology providers, including pharmacists and physicians, with specialty drug benefits analysis, drug coverage inquiries and insurance appeals, when necessary.
- Answers telephones in an efficient and timely manner to lend appropriate assistance to providers in the medication delivery process.
- Triages drug coverage requests under the supervision of the practice manager. Communicates coverage determination status to physicians and/or staff.
- Troubleshoots problems, inquiries and new processing procedures for coverage determinations.
- Coordinates care between the specialty pharmacies, prescriber’s office and patient.
- Assists with internal task management for patient education, visit scheduling, medication management and patient calls.
- May perform clinical support tasks as outlined on the Clinical Support Staff Scope of Practice document.
- Perform other duties as assigned and works within the scope of State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician Licensure.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: High School Diploma. Completion of accredited Pharmacy Technician educational program.
CREDENTIALS/LICENSURE: Pharmacy Technician Licensure in the State of Michigan required.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years’ experience in a pharmacy setting preferred.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS (ABILITIES & SKILLS):
- Proficient/knowledgeable in medical terminology.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Proficient knowledge of major health plans and insurance processes.
- Knowledge of prescription drug names, therapeutic classes and claims processing.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations needed during the course of performing basic job duties, i.e.: calculating proper dosages or days’ supply of medication.
- Understanding of formularies and prior authorization processes. Familiarity with pharmaceutical manufacturers and product/cost information.
- Proficient in operating a standard desktop and Windows-based computer system, including but not limited to, electronic medical records, email, e-learning, intranet, Microsoft Word and Excel, and computer navigation. Ability to use other software as required while performing the essential functions of the job.
- Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal forms, including proper phone etiquette. Ability to read, understand and respond to detailed written and oral instructions.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented, multi-disciplinary environment; displays courteous and friendly demeanor. Collaborates clinical care ideas across multiple patient care services and communicates effectively as a patient advocate.
- Ability to exhibit a professional and positive image and work effectively with various levels of organizational members and diverse populations including IHA staff, providers, family members, insurance carriers, vendors, external customers and community groups.
- Ability to cross-train in other areas of practice in order to achieve smooth flow of all operations.
- Good organizational and time management skills to effectively juggle multiple priorities and time constraints.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement and problem-solving skills, specifically as it relates to resolving medication reconciliation issues.
- Ability to handle patient and organizational information in a confidential manner.
- Knowledge of the compliance aspects of clinical care and patient privacy and best practices in medical office operations.
- Ability to drive to multiple sites within a week.
- Successful completion of IHA competency-based program within introductory and training period.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:
- Physical activity that often requires keyboarding, phone work and charting.
- Physical activity that often requires time working on a computer.
- Physical activity that sometimes requires lifting up to 5 lbs.
- Physical activity that sometimes requires walking.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, color vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust and focus.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment.
- Must hear and speak well enough to conduct business over the telephone or face to face for long periods of time in English.
MINIMUM ENVIRONMENTAL EXPECTATIONS:
This job operates in a medical facility and requires regular walking to various locations around the hospital/clinic. Employees will be working where there is patient care equipment. Hazardous materials, including bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids are also present. Exposure to sharps, x-rays, patients’ conditions and some unpleasant sights, smells and contagious diseases is possible. This position requires significant interaction with people (many of whom are scared, hurt and/or ill) which can be stressful and result in competing priorities.
